Speaking to -
Born on Curaçao, always linked
Who are the people bringing Baia Vista to life? In this interview series, we talk to the people behind the project: from buyers and investors to designers, builders and others involved. Each with their own story, a unique vision and a special bond with Curaçao.
Be inspired by their motivations, dreams and experiences - and discover how they are building something beautiful together on this sunny island.
In this story, we speak to Tania & Brayon - both born and raised in Curaçao, but now living in the Netherlands for many years. Despite the distance, the island always remained an important part of their lives. With their home within Baia Vista, they now give that connection another tangible place.
Tania and Brayon have lived in the Netherlands for many years, but Curaçao has never stopped feeling like home. In daily life, Brayon runs a metal company specialising in process engineering for the food industry, while Tania works within specialist services at an employment company.
Together they have been together for 25 years and form a close-knit family with their daughter, who, like her parents, has strong ties to the island. Although they have now lived in the Netherlands longer than on Curaçao, the island remains an important part of their lives.
“Curaçao really feels like coming home to us,” they tell us. “As soon as we get there, you immediately notice the difference. Life feels calmer and you are much more together with family.”
That family connection plays a big part in their lives. Mothers, sisters, uncles, aunts and other relatives still live on the island, making every visit feel like a reunion.
“We actually go back every year - sometimes even twice a year. Spending time with family is hugely important to us.”
That connection to Curaçao runs like a thread through their lives. Nine years ago, they even married on the island, a place that for them symbolises family, warmth and memories.
Their daughter also shares that sentiment. “Since she was born, she has gone with me to Curaçao almost every year. She feels so much at home there that she has now even taken a gap year to live on the island with my mother and sister for longer periods of time.”
Brayon and Tania got to know Baia Vista and the people behind it at the Second Home Fair.
“We had actually been thinking about something on Curaçao for some time,” they recount.
“And during that fair, the idea stuck anyway.”
What particularly appealed to them was the combination of location, convenience and future potential.
“Baia Vista is very conveniently located for us. You are relatively central without the heavy traffic of some other parts of the island. In addition, many family members live fairly close by.”
The area around St George also appealed to them immediately.
“We know Koral Tabak from the old days,” Tania says with a laugh.
“We used to go there every Sunday with friends and family. In crowded cars, we drove over dirt roads full of potholes and dust clouds towards the beach and the race track where people raced and drifted. Those are memories you never forget.”
This is precisely why they find it special to see how the area is developing now.
“You notice that more and more is happening around St George's, but it still feels authentic. That's exactly what we like about it.”
A key moment came during their visit to Curaçao last February.
“We then went to the construction site together with Richard,” they recount.
“Only then did we really see how energetically the construction was going and the quality that was being put down. That gave us a lot of confidence.”
The turn-key nature of the homes also played a big role.
“We wanted something we don't have to worry about much ourselves. We also like the fact that Baia Vista is a gated community. That still gives extra peace of mind when you're not on the island.”
For Brayon and Tania, it will be a combination of own use and rental.
“Of course, we want to enjoy it as much as possible ourselves when we are in Curaçao. At the same time, we also see opportunities in renting it out at times when we are not there.”
They don't have to think long about that.
“That idea actually runs like a thread through our lives,” they laugh.
“We definitely see ourselves spending longer periods in Curaçao later on or wintering over.”
Despite the distance, they said the process was pleasant and orderly.
“The digital sales agreement went smoothly and quickly. Since we happened to be in Curaçao, we were able to arrange some of the powers of attorney at the notary right away.”
However, they did notice that some processes around compliance and documentation take a bit more time.
“But we understand that too. At the end of the day, you want everything to be just right.”
“Whether it will soon be even more beautiful than in the brochure,” they say, laughing.
But in the end, for them it is mostly about the moments together.
“A housewarming with family. Nice cooking. Enjoying our own place in Curaçao.”
And maybe even walk to the beach at St George's Bay soon.
“Do your research properly,” they advise.
“Be sure to check out different projects when you are in Curaçao and take your time to make a good choice.”
But waiting too long? They don't believe in that either.
“Curaçao is a small island,” they conclude smiling.
“Space is not unlimited.”
