Speaking to -
Baia Vista's contractor
Who are the people bringing Baia Vista to life? In this interview series, we talk to the people behind the project: from buyers and investors to designers, builders and others involved. Each with their own story, a unique vision and a special bond with Curaçao.
Be inspired by their motivations, dreams and experiences - and discover how they are building something beautiful together on this sunny island.
A strong design is one thing - the execution ultimately makes the difference. For the realisation of Baia Vista, we are working with Huron Construction B.V., the contractor responsible for on-site construction.
With over 20 years of experience in Curaçao and a broad portfolio of residential, hospitality and utility projects, Huron brings not only execution power, but also local knowledge, technical expertise and a pragmatic approach.
In this interview, they talk about their background, their working methods and why Baia Vista is a special project for them.
“Within Huron, we work with three partners, each with more than 20 years of experience in the construction industry. Our backgrounds differ greatly - from construction engineering to business economics - and it is precisely this combination that makes us strong as a team.
In addition, we work with a loyal team of experienced professionals with whom we have realised projects in Curaçao for many years.”
“Our experience is broad. From luxury residential villas to hotels, care centres and larger housing projects.
Projects we look back on with pride include luxury villas on Seru Boca, projects in Blue Bay and La Privada, residences in Santa Catharina and hospitality projects such as Hotel Acoya.”
“The combination of technical knowledge, practical experience and organisational strength.
A construction project is not only about execution on the building site, but also about planning, procurement, logistics and being able to anticipate conditions that are different on an island like Curaçao than in Europe.”
“Through a mutual relationship, we came into contact with the team behind Baia Vista.
From the first talks, we noticed that this was a serious and professionally designed project, with a long-term vision and a clear organisation. That's important, because as a contractor, you enter into a project together that lasts several years.”
“Our first thought was honestly that it was relatively far from everything,” they tell us, laughing.
“But that image has now completely changed. An awful lot of development is happening in and around Hòfi Sint Joris. What first seemed distant is increasingly becoming part of a logically expanding residential area.”
The venue itself made an immediate impression.
“The space, location and scale of the project make it special. This is not a standard infill location, but really a place where you can put up something big and high quality.”
“Quality starts with choices at the front end. We work as much as possible with suppliers we have worked with for years and know their quality.
With a project like Baia Vista, you also have to take extra account of the climate and its location close to the sea. This is why we take additional measures at the material level.”
“Aluminium windows, doors and balustrades, for example, receive an additional protective coating after the standard powder coating, specifically to extend their life in the coastal climate.”
In addition, daily quality control takes place on the construction site, in close coordination with the structural engineer and other parties involved.
“We work with an integral planning towards delivery that is continuously monitored and adjusted where necessary.
In building, you always have parts that go faster and parts that slow down. The important thing is that you actively manage these.”
Cooperation also plays an important role in this.
“We have weekly construction meetings with the developer in which progress, planning and any concerns are discussed.”
“Climate is a factor. When it rains, it often rains extremely immediately and work is temporarily halted.
In addition, you work on an island. Not all materials are readily available, so planning ahead is crucial.”
The market has also changed.
“The construction volume in Curaçao is high and that means pressure on availability of skilled workers and materials. You have to anticipate that organisationally.”
“As a contractor, we are not in direct contact with buyers, but we understand very well that trust is important when buying remotely.”
Therefore, progress is recorded structurally.
“We take frequent drone footage and progress shots that are shared with buyers through the developer, so people can actually see what is happening.”
“That the homes are delivered as agreed and with quality materials and finishes appropriate to the level of the project.”
“The scale and design.
Because the project will be realised in larger phases and work with a repetitive construction system, we can build efficiently without compromising on quality.
But above all: it is a project with a lot of potential. The location, the development of the area and the quality of the concept make this a special project for us to work on.”
“Always do good research when buying property in Curaçao - especially if you are buying remotely.
Think not only about the property itself, but also practical issues such as ownership structure, financing, banking, rental and management.”
“We believe Baia Vista is a project with strong future potential in a location that will only see further development in the coming years.”
