Introduction of the Caribbean Guilder
On 31 March 2025, the Caribbean Guilder (abbreviated to XCG) will be introduced in Curaçao and Sint Maarten as the new official currency, replacing the current Antillean Guilder (ANG). The Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten (CBCS) expects this to lay the foundations for further economic development and stability.
What does this mean for you as a buyer of a new-build property on Curaçao?
Exchange rate and value: The Caribbean Guilder retains the same value as the Antillean Guilder, with a fixed exchange rate of 1 USD = 1.79 XCG. This means that prices and transactions in the property sector remain unchanged in terms of value.
Transition period: Until 30 June 2025, you can pay using either the Antillean guilder or the Caribbean guilder. From 1 July 2025, the Caribbean guilder will be the sole legal tender.
Currency exchange: You can exchange your Antillean guilders free of charge at commercial banks until 31 March 2026. At the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten, this is even possible until 31 March 2055.
From 31 March 2025, we will use the new currency in our communications, replacing the Antillean guilder.
